PCT Math Adventure: 8th Grade End-of-Year Review

The last few weeks of 8th grade are brutally hard to teach. Kids are checked out, the weather is warm, and traditional review packets get stuffed in backpacks the moment you hand them out. After 12 years in the classroom, I finally cracked the code — and it involves a bear eating your food.

Welcome to the Pacific Crest Trail Math Adventure, the end-of-year review unit my students genuinely look forward to all year long.

Here is how it works: each student hikes the PCT by completing 8 carefully crafted worksheets, one for each core 8th-grade standard. As they move through the trail, they manage a real trail budget, drawing scenario cards that throw surprise twists into their journey — a sudden rainstorm forces a gear purchase, a kind stranger donates $50, or yes, a bear destroys their food supply and they have to recalculate. The math is rigorous and standards-aligned. The context makes every problem feel like it matters.

Standards covered:
– Solving multi-step equations
– Exponent rules
– Scientific notation
– Square and cube roots
– Geometric transformations
– Pythagorean theorem and its converse
– Inequalities
– Systems of equations

The financial literacy thread woven through the unit is not fluff — students practice real money math at every checkpoint, building number sense and decision-making skills alongside algebra fluency. It is cross-curricular without feeling forced.

This resource is completely print-and-go. There is zero prep beyond photocopying. No technology required, no special materials, no elaborate setup. Just print, hand it out, and watch your classroom transform into a trail crew who cannot stop solving problems.

Teachers have used this as a full unit replacement for the final 3-4 weeks, as a center rotation, or as an early-finisher extension. It works in self-contained classrooms, with co-teachers, and in intervention settings with minor scaffolding.
