Description

The last few weeks of school are brutal. Your 8th graders are mentally checked out, the weather is warm, and you still need to review equations, exponents, scientific notation, square roots, transformations, the Pythagorean theorem, inequalities, and systems of equations before they walk out the door for good. Sound familiar?

This resource was built for exactly that moment.

The Pacific Crest Trail Math Adventure turns your classroom into a 2,650-mile journey from the Mexican border to Canada. Students hike the trail in stages, completing one focused worksheet per checkpoint. Every worksheet targets a specific 8th-grade standard, but the problems live inside a real adventure story, so the math feels purposeful instead of pointless.

Here is how it works. Each student manages a trail budget throughout the unit. At every checkpoint, they draw a scenario card that throws a real-world money event at them: a bear raids your food bag and costs you 47 dollars, you find a 50-dollar bill tucked in a trail register, a resupply box gets lost and you have to improvise. These cards keep students laughing, talking, and doing arithmetic they would normally resist. Financial literacy is woven in naturally, no extra planning required.

The 8 worksheets cover:
– Multi-step equations
– Exponent rules
– Scientific notation
– Square and cube roots
– Geometric transformations
– Pythagorean theorem and distance
– Inequalities
– Systems of equations

Everything is print-and-go. You do not need to build a thing. Answer keys are included for every worksheet so you can check work quickly or hand grading off to students.

After 12 years in the classroom, this is the end-of-year unit my students actually ask about in September. They come back from summer and tell me the PCT unit was their favorite part of 8th grade math. That is not an accident. When kids have a story to follow and stakes to manage, they stay in it.

This works beautifully as a full unit replacement for the final three to five weeks, a sub-friendly packet, a summer bridge program, or a summer school curriculum. It is equally strong for Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 classrooms.

Grab it, print it, and let your students hike.
