Description

The last few weeks of school are brutal. You know it, I know it. The energy is chaotic, the motivation is evaporating, and you still need your 8th graders to meaningfully review equations, exponents, scientific notation, square roots, transformations, the Pythagorean theorem, inequalities, and systems of equations before they walk out the door for summer.

That is exactly why I built the PCT Math Adventure after 12 years in the classroom watching perfectly good review materials get tuned out the moment May hits.

Here is how it works: your students hike the Pacific Crest Trail — on paper, through an unfolding adventure story — and at each checkpoint they solve a worksheet tied to one of the 8 core 8th-grade math standards. Every problem has a purpose inside the story. They are not just solving equations; they are calculating how far their food supplies will stretch on the trail. They are not just working with scientific notation; they are measuring real elevation data from the Sierra Nevada.

The magic ingredient is the scenario card deck. Students draw random event cards at each checkpoint — a bear raids their food bag, a stranger gifts them a camp stove, they find fifty dollars on a switchback — and those events ripple into their trail budget, which they manage all the way to the finish line. Financial literacy, narrative suspense, and rigorous math review all living in the same unit.

What you get:
– 8 print-and-go worksheets, each targeting one standard with story-embedded problems
– A scenario card deck (print and cut once, reuse forever)
– A student trail budget tracker
– A teacher answer key for all 8 worksheets
– Light teacher notes so you can run this with zero prep after the first read-through

This has become the unit my class talks about at the end-of-year party. Students who check out in May stay locked in because they genuinely want to finish the hike. The budget tracker creates just enough competition and stakes to keep every student accountable through the final problem.

Print it Monday, hike it all week. Your future self — and your students — will thank you.
