Description
Word problems can be tricky for first graders, especially when the change is the unknown. This set of tasks cards lets them practice the very specific math skill.
Each task card includes a single, easy to read word problem involving addition or subtraction within 20. The beginning quantity and result (sum or difference) is known, while the change (the number to be added or subtracted) is not. These are open-response questions, not multiple choice.
Includes:
-
• 20 Task Cards
-
• Recording Sheets
-
• Answer Key
There are two different recording sheets. The first one instructs students to choose 4 cards and use the space provided to show their work. This version is perfect to use in math centers or for fast finishers.
The second sheet has space for students to write their answers for all 20 cards. This version is great for scoot or a walk the room activity when you want students to work through the entire set.
I like to use task cards in guided math groups. Give each student a card to work on and then have them share their solution and reasoning with the group. This will give you an opportunity to reteach or address misunderstandings if needed.
