Description
Connected Blocks: A Visual Math Program for Special Education
Connected Blocks is a visual, concept-based math program designed to help students truly understand numbers—not just memorize procedures.
Created by educator Jennifer Tate, Connected Blocks was developed through years of teaching students with learning differences, including ADHD, dyscalculia, autism, and other processing challenges. Traditional math instruction often moves too quickly to symbols and abstract rules. Connected Blocks slows the process down and builds mathematical understanding through visual structure and pattern recognition.
Instead of asking students to memorize disconnected steps, this system shows how numbers relate to one another.
What Makes Connected Blocks Different
Visual Number Relationships
Students see how numbers connect, combine, and break apart. This helps them build a strong conceptual foundation for math.
Designed for Diverse Learners
The program works especially well for:
- Special education classrooms
- Students with ADHD or dyscalculia
- Visual and spatial learners
- Students who struggle with traditional worksheets
Concept Before Procedure
Rather than memorizing algorithms, students learn why math works.
Builds Confidence
When students understand number relationships, math becomes predictable and less frustrating.

Why I Created These Resources
After years working with students who were bright, capable, and curious—but struggling with traditional math instruction—I realized the problem wasn’t the students.
The problem was the method.
Connected Blocks grew out of real classroom experience helping students see patterns in numbers and develop confidence in math again.
