Description
This activity is such a fun way to combine math and literacy! Students start by writing their name, then use manipulatives to map it out and count how many letters they have. Next, they write that number in the box, graph it in a 10-frame, and show it with tally marks—three different ways to represent the same number. And to make it personal, they finish by drawing a picture of themselves. It’s hands-on, engaging, and perfect for building number sense while practicing name writing.
Activity Time: Approx. 15 minutes
Student Will Practice:
- Students will practice writing their own name (or a friend’s), counting letters, and representing numbers in multiple ways—numerals, 10-frame, and tally marks. They’ll also strengthen letter recognition and connect math concepts to something meaningful: their own identity!
- Creative Expression
What’s Included:
1 activity page with:
- Space for students to write their name.
- Box for recording the number of letters.
- 10-frame graph for visual representation x2 to build longer names
- Tally mark section for another representation.
- Area for a self-portrait to make it fun and personal.
Benefits:
- Kids love this because it’s all about them! They’re learning math and literacy at the same time—writing names, counting letters, and showing numbers in different forms. It’s hands-on, visual, and personal, which keeps them engaged and makes the learning stick.
For you, this activity is quick, easy, and versatile. It works for back-to-school, math centers, small groups, or even as a fun homework connection. It reinforces number sense and letter recognition without needing extra prep. Plus, it’s a great way to learn more about your students while they practice essential skills. I can be extended to other labels around the room. (desk, table, carpet)
