Description

Make teaching complex sentences engaging and hands-on with this interactive grammar activity! In this resource, students physically manipulate sentence parts to build and correctly punctuate complex sentences using dependent and independent clauses.

Perfect for upper elementary and middle school ELA (Grades 3–8), this activity helps students master sentence structure, subordinating conjunctions, and punctuation in complex sentences in a way that actually sticks.

What’s Included:

  • 20 complex sentences broken into separate dependent clauses and independent clauses
  • Sentence strips students physically manipulate to rebuild each sentence
  • Punctuation practice focusing on correct comma placement in complex sentences
  • A ready-to-use SCOOT activity
  • Flexible directions for whole group, small group, grammar centers, or independent work

How It Works:

Each of the 20 included sentences is separated into individual clauses. Students must:

✔ Identify the dependent and independent clauses
✔ Rebuild the sentence in the correct order
✔ Add proper punctuation (including commas after introductory clauses)
✔ Justify their punctuation choices

Because students are physically moving and manipulating sentence parts, they gain a deeper understanding of how complex sentences are structured—not just where to “stick a comma.”

Perfect For:

✔ Grammar centers
✔ Small group instruction
✔ Whole class games
✔ SCOOT activities
✔ Test prep and spiral review
✔ Early finishers
✔ Independent practice
✔ AVID classrooms

This resource makes practicing complex sentence structure and punctuation rules active, collaborative, and meaningful—so your students aren’t just memorizing grammar rules… they’re applying them.

Meet the Seller

Hi, I'm Betsy. If you struggle to get your 3rd through 8th grade students excited about grammar and writing, I am here to help! It's time to say goodbye to grammatically incorrect sentences and dry, formulaic writing pieces, and instead say hello to low-prep, no-stress writing activities and resources that even the most reluctant of writers will love. As a published romance author, elementary school teacher, and teacher consultant with the National Writing Project, my research-based, teacher-tested, student-approved writing resources are built upon creativity, peer communication and collaboration, and critical thinking/reflection. In my 20+ years in the classroom, I have taught nearly every grade from 1st through 8th and have served on nearly every committee there is: AVID team, Equity team, VAPA team, ELA Curriculum Design team, School Site Council, and have most recently served as an induction coach for new teachers. I bring all my experience as a teacher and writer to each of my resources in order to provide you with easy to use, engaging activities that actually work!
